Did you know?
- 2.21% (2.68crore) of the Indian population is disabled. The disability advocacy group estimates it to be ~5%, whereas WHO estimates it to be ~15%.
- People with Disabilities lead marginalized life because of several attitudinal, environmental, and eco-system related barriers.
- Education penetration is quite low among People with Disabilities – only 46% are educated, out of which only 1% are graduate
- Only 36% of the disabled population is employed – out of which 78% are male
Lower educational qualifications and lack of employability skills are the most significant barriers in their employment. A few training institutions and NGOs are focusing on training them as per the sector requirement, thereby enhancing their employability and making them job-ready for future opportunities.
Individuals with Disabilities face several barriers to getting employed. Most of the organizations are still unaware of this large untapped resource pool and the potential value they can bring to the companies. Many organizations are unsure of employing them, as they do not know how to identify the right resource for a job and recruit them.
Social Equity Advisory Services can bridge this gap by working with organizations in helping them become Disability Inclusive & Confident Organization and thereby providing equal opportunities to people with disabilities in the mainstream workplace. Compliance to Rights for People with Disability Act 2016 (RPWD16)
Rights for People with Disabilities Act 2016 (RPWD16), passed on 27th December 2016, replace the PwD Act of 1995. The Act was notified on 15th June 2017. For the first time, the Act has provided a clear mandate for private-sector organizations, though there is no mention of quota for hiring people with disabilities.
